This past week at work we held a conference on crisis and risk communication (I think that’s pretty related to having multiples, no?) and one of our speakers, I found out, is pregnant with twins. I always love meeting soon-to-be parents of multiples and love answering their questions. I love it even more when I can answer said questions without a four-year-old asking me a million questions.

When I was pregnant with Aaron and Jill I always received the same advice: get them on a schedule, always take help and then there was the promise that no matter what, it gets better. While that advice is fine and dandy (and usually something I pass on) I like to add the following:

• Take shifts throughout the night. Scott and I used to split the night so that way each of us was guaranteed at least 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

• Do not take anything your spouse says to you in the first three months to heart. You are sleep deprived and on edge.

• Just because it worked for someone else does not mean it will work for you. Do not force anything because everyone else said it’s the right thing to do. You know your kids better than anyone else. Go with your gut.

• Take care of you! It is so hard to do this in those first few months, but honestly, it is so important.
