When we were contacted to help spread the word about the resources available from PBS Kids, we were happy to oblige. PBS has been providing quality educational programming for kids for a long time, and their websites are following suit. When I took a look around PBSKids.org and PBSparents.org tonight I was so surprised at the amount of useful information available to parents! PBSKids is chock full of learning games starring your kids’ favorite characters, while PBS Parents contains an enormous amount of information on everything from stimulating your childrens’ creativity, to planning a fun themed birthday party.
Here are a few tips from PBSParents.org on how to turn your kids into avid readers:
- Create a cozy reading space with your child. Set rules for this area of the house to maintain peaceful reading.
- Let your kids catch you reading. Talk about what you read in newspapers, books, and magazines so that they will understand the importance of reading.
- Encourage your child to read aloud at home. Your child will learn to read with expression and understanding, while sharing the experience with you- or siblings, or grandparents!
- A trip to the grocery store can help reinforce reading skills. Have your child write the grocery list, find the items using the store’s signs, and read product labels. A great way to also encourage healthy eating!
This is just the tip of the iceberg! Check out PBS Kids and PBS Parents.org for more fun, games, and education!
If you have preschoolers, you won’t want to miss Dinosaur Train, a brand new animated series which teaches kids scientific thinking and skills, Premiering Sept 7th!
